‘Unity in Community’ with Carolyn Burlingame-Goff
11:00 Sunday Service
We’re delighted to welcome Carolyn Burlingame-Goff to Basel this month!
Carolyn has taught English language and American culture at the University of Heidelberg in Heidelberg, Germany since 1993.
She joined EUU: European Universalists in Europe 21 years ago and has served as Fellowship Representative, Retreat Organiser and President. Currently she is Fellowship Coordinator and committed to increasing fellowship between our various Fellowships in Europe. Carolyn’s main interests outside of the classroom and EUU are community theater, handicrafts, and her family.
Based on Jonathan Haidt’s 2012 book The Righteous Mind: Why Good People are Divided by Politics and Religion, Carolyn’s homily will examine human morality as it relates to politics and religion.
According to Haidt, universal moral foundations are the source of all our moral instincts, and they are shared across all cultures. These moral foundations can be understood as evolutionary adaptations to long-standing challenges in social life.
The moral interests of liberals focus on concerns about care, fairness and liberty; conservatives also endorse loyalty, authority and sanctity in their moral interests.
While our intuition-based morality might divide us into different communities and political parties, by understanding the moral foundations on which all our moral interests are based, we might be able to disagree more constructively.

‘The Condor and the Eagle’ documentary, at the Haus der Religionen, Europaplatz, Bern
Our UU Bern friends are excited to share about the
documentary they are co-hosting with the Interfaith Climate group. The event is
organised principally by The Church at the Haus der Religionen (HDR).
Read more about the film here; find directions to the HDR here, and watch a trailer here.
There’s a whole program of events on the day: the film showing follows a preparation event at 14:00, also at the HDR, for the interfaith environmental movement’s contribution to the Swiss National climate strike on May 15
